Saving lives in Indonesia
Working with the Rotary clubs in Solo Kartini, Indonesia, New London, and two clubs in Westport we are engaged is reducing the risk of Dengue Fever in Solo Kartini in an very unusual way. The $36,000 Rotary Global Grant Project (the first Global Grant project in the world) began in July 2010 and continues through summer 2011. The lead US club is Westport CT with Trumbull's financial contribution at $2,500. About half of the cost of the project is funded by grants form Rotary International and our own Rotary District in Connecticut.
Dengue fever is spread by a day-biting mosquito, a cousin of the night-biting malaria mosquito. Victims of Dengue fever suffer severe bone damage and sometimes death from the disease. The insects breed in standing water such as large public water tanks used for public bathing. Working with the Indonesian government we will tile these tanks with white ceramic tiles so that health-care workers can easy see and remove the larvae twice a week. Early testing shows that this approach can make a significant impact and this project may serve as a model that can be used in other communities in Southeast Asia.

Fun with the Guv
When President Steve asked DG Jim Lang to introduce the guests at the table, he did a card trick to honor our visiting Governor, Julieanne Reppenhagen. Julie drew a card from our raffle deck, tore it in half since is was not the winning 10 of Clubs, but then discovered that the card she "freely" selected matched the card shown on the Cover of The Rotarian magazine. Jim encouraged members to read the article about Rotary's efforst to defend kids from the meth epidemic. |
 |
| The fact that this little stunt improved the odds by eliminating one card in the deck was appreciated by raffle investors. |
|
| A new leadership team, headed by Stephen Jakab, was inducted June 30. |
